How To Start A Website
By Jayme Hanson

How To Start a Website Step #1: Decide on a theme Your first step is to determine what type of website you want to develop. Is the website going to be about pets, plants, investing and are you going to take orders directly through your website? When choosing your theme, pick one that you are interested in and also has a demand for the product or service.

How To Start a Website Step #2: Types of tools The next step is deciding on which tools to use. You will need some type of HTML editor or text editor that generates HTML pages. You also might need a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client (if your hosting company doesn't provide that option) to get your pages and images from your computer to your hosting company's servers.

How To Start a Website Step #3: Learn your tools You will need to learn how to use your web editing software tools. I would recommend that you learn at least the basic HTML codes such as bolding, header tags, paragraph markers, head, title and body tags. If you learn the basics of HTML then you can troubleshoot any problems your editor software might have caused.

How To Start a Website Step #4: Web Hosting You can get standard web hosting, free web hosting, ecommerce and dedicated or shared hosting. The type of web hosting that you will choose depends on the type of website you have built, how much you want to

spend and how much time you want to spend maintaining your website. Each web hosting company will provide different features so make a list of the features you want before you do your research. This will help narrow your choices.

How To Start a Website Step #5: Promote your website Once you have your website up on the Internet, you will need to promote it. Here are just a few ways you can use:

  • Word of mouth - tell your friends and have them tell their friends
  • Email - you can add your website URL to your signature file so everytime you send an email it advertises your website
  • Banner ads - you can create banners promoting your site and ask other people to link to you
  • Link exchanges - if you see a site that is related to yours, write to the owner and ask to exchange links
  • Search engines - submit your website to every search engine you can find
